Sunday, September 17 – Saturday, September 23 [Abbreviated]
[With a Shout out to Sunday, September 3 – Saturday, 10]
This Week in Friends: Last weekend started with a visit from beloved friends from out of town. You know, I thought about using the word beloved in that sentence, keying and deleting it a couple times. I like beloved better than “dear” friends. There’s a moment when I looked around the table at a group of people who hadn’t all been together in 10 years and surely my heart skipped a beat. It’s a rough world. To have an evening of great humor, memories, and warmth was a gift.
This Week in Vacations: I spent 4 days, and all but a wee bit of my work-allotted vacation time, in Florida with a small group of friends and acquaintances. I don’t leave town often preferring to live my life like I’m on vacation as much as I can when I’m in my own zip code. I do like traveling places, exploring, talking to new people, and soaking in the feeling of learning and experiencing new things. For right now though, Cincinnati is my home and it’s where I want to be.
On this particular trip, I happened to be reading Paul Bowles novel Sheltering Sky. It’s a book where a married couple goes on a journey to help them save their marriage. Here’s an often quoted passage from the book about traveling.
“Whereas the tourist generally hurries back home at the end of a few weeks or months, the traveler, belonging no more to one place than to the next, moves slowly, over periods of years, from one part of the earth to another.”
I’m a tourist, for sure.
This Week in Social: I began the week on vacation. I ended at the Midpoint Music Festival. Lots of friends, sun, and music. When I walked into my apartment building on Sunday night (when I write this weekly post), I literally said out loud, “What a great fucking weekend.” And a great fucking week. What I reaffirmed this week is I’m having a pretty good life.
